Dream of Two Doves, Divided

Author: Ryan Hutzel

Rock Doves

I found myself standing in the middle of darkness. There was nothing around; it was a void. I didn’t even know if I was standing on solid ground.  In an instance, a solid beam of fierce white light appeared out of the darkness and shined straight on my face. Somehow I knew this light was living.  When it hit me, it wrapped around me like a blanket.  It was peaceful and comforting.  Shortly after the light ripped into the darkness, I saw two birds flying down out of the light. Seemingly as they were falling, it became obvious that they were quarreling and combating against each.  Though there beaks did not move, I could hear a mummer that they were raising against each other.  As they came closer, this became more evident; however I was not able to understand the subject of the conversation.

Soon they were only a short distance from me, I began to lift up my right hand and put my index finger out horizontally away from my face aligned with my eyes.  In that moment, they quit fighting and landed on my finger.  The two birds had the appearance of doves, only smaller in statute.  I could see that they were bitter angry at one another, but then something strange happened they suddenly looked saddened and full of regret and hung their heads for a time. After that they looked up and at me. Their eyes were full of remorse and anguish. They were so sorry; it was almost unbearable to look on them.  Then they looked again at each other as though they were speaking to each other. They faced me again for a brief moment and what happened next was amazing. They slowly began to emerge together.  Their little bodies ghostly moved back and forth in and out of each other’s existence and soon solidified to on larger dove.  After the merging, the dove with it’s head bowed eventually looked up at me. His eyes made direct contact with mine as did the two the first time, however this time they were a fierce, righteous, blue fire blazing into me. The dove asked a question to me without moving his beak, “what is next?”
